Steven Lawler is an internationally exhibited figurative painter whose work has been shown in places as diverse as Darlington and Dubai and Mayfair and New York. He holds a Masters degree in Fine Art and has been painting professionally for ten years. His paintings have sold at some of the world's largest and most prestigious art fairs including The Armory Show in New York and The Palm Beach Fair in Miami. He has work in private collections in the USA, Europe, Arabia and India and has produced portraits for Arabian Royalty and English Society.
Lawler is indebted to the old masters and admires the hard work, creative power and craftsmanship that went into producing their paintings. He is also a great film fan and when not painting spends much of his time watching and studying films - particularly older black and white horror and film noir detective films which he especially admires for their dark themes and intense and clever lighting effects. This interest in film narrative and lighting combined with its dramatic effect on the human form - notably the drama it can bring to a face - carries through into his paintings and merges with his interest in 17th century Dutch, Spanish and Italian painting to help bring to life Lawler's own distinctive filmic, old master style of painting.
Steven generally works on ultra smooth canvas, fine Belgian linen or wood panel using only lightfast, handmade oil paints that are guaranteed resistant to fading over time. The craft of painting is very important to Lawler and he is especially interested in following the traditions of the old masters whenever possible in an effort to produce paintings of superior quality that will stand the test of time.
